mThe historical park is amazing. The amount of people who come to Thailand and miss the best bits is quite depressing... There are some world class tourist sites and, whilst you don't have them to yourself, they are pretty empty. This is superb and of huge cultural significance to Thais.
This is the centre of an ancient kingdom that split away from Khymer rule to form a large part of what is now Thailand. Lots of the myths and legends that make up the Thai national consciousness stem from here. Please don't think I'm being snotty about Thai culture by talking about yths and legends... I'm British for God's sake! We have more than our fair share of half truths, quarter truths and down right lies that help make up the national identity. I mean, King Arthur and a sword given to him by some aquatic tart, and don't even get me started on Robin Hood or our plucky underdog spirit that won the second world war, etc etc etc.
It is a series of temple ruins spread of hectares and hectares. It makes for a lovely couple of days of cycling around.
